The Santa Lucia Highlands are one of the crown jewels of California viticulture. The AVA is home to some of the state’s most vibrant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and other varietals. It was Spanish missionaries who first recognized that the soil and climate of the area was favorable to viticulture and began planting vines on the rolling windswept hillsides.Today, the appellation encompasses over 6,000 acres of vineyards, most planted on elevated terraces not far from the Monterey Bay.
It was here way back in 1982, that Gary Pisoni first planted his namesake vineyard, one of the highest in the region. The southeast-facing vineyards planted above the valley floor rise to elevations of up to 1300 feet. The vineyards first grab the morning sun and then enjoy a cool afternoon breeze that slows the ripening process down and gives the fruit time to develop its character and depth of flavor.
Produced from three small blocks, Pisoni’s Lucia Chardonnay is the fruit of the family’s longstanding commitment to sustainably-grown wines of intense vitality and character.
The Soberanes Vineyard iw named for José María Soberanes, who marched from Mexico to Monterey Bay with the famed Portolá expedition, and his son Feliciano, who acquired the 8,900-acre land grant as repayment for a loan of forty horses, fifty head of cattle, four oxen and some sheep.
The Pisoni and Franscioni families have joined forces to farm this site, taking advantge of the sandy loam soils that host big sub-soil boulders layered into the alluvial fan. Fruit from this exceptional vineyard is hand-picked and sorted, fermented with native yeast, and aged in French oak barrels.
Fruit from the 2018 Lucia Soberanes Vineyard Chardonnay showcases the inherent power and vibrancy of vines that had the strength to push their way deep into the rocky, granite-laden soil. Subtle notes of flint on the palate slowly open up and evolve to reveal accents of ripe pear and citrus blossom.
