Schug Carneros

In the Carneros Appellation, southwest of the town of Sonoma, California, Schug Carneros Estate Winery crafts wines from some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes in the world.

If that weren’t enough, the winery itself is the fruit of one of California’s most celebrated winemakers, Walter Schug. During Schug’s tenure as the founding winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards back in the 1970’s, he created California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend as well as several legendary vineyard designated Cabernets.

Schug winery lies in Sonoma’s famous Carneros District, an area of low hills and flat lands profoundly affected by the cool ocean breeze from the bay. During the summer, a ceiling of fog hovers over the vineyards during in the morning hours. As the fog lifts later in the day, it relieves the vines from the heat and brings cool winds rushing through a break in the coastal mountains known as “The Petaluma Gap”.
