The Aloe Vera plant, also known as “Lily of the Desert”, is sometimes called the “Plant of immortality”. According to legend it was also Cleopatra’s beauty secret and the bitter gelatinous liquid within the plant’s large leaves give the plant its name which derives from the Arabic word alloeh, meqaning “bitter”.
Roughly a century ago researchers first confirmed that Aloe gel also relieves pain and accelerates the healiing process in burns and abrasions by increasing the availability of oxygen to the skin. For this reason a wise cook might want to keep an Aloe plant in their kitchen. This way, if they should burn themselves at the stove, they need only break off an Aloe leaf and smear the natural remedy directly onto the affected area.
