San Francisco’s iconic vegetarian restaurant Greens will celebrate its 40th Anniversary this year with a Chef Dinner Series.
Greens sprung to life in 1979 in order to provide an opportunity for Zen students to extend their practice to the workplace. Over the last four decades, it has remained true to the fundamental vision and practice of its founders, the San Francisco Zen Center, providing guests from around the world attentively prepared and seasonally-focused cuisine.
For many years, the entire staff at Greens were Zen students. Founding Chef Deborah Madison was a student at Zen Center herself for 18 years where she held various kitchen positions. In 1981, Annie Somerville joined the restaurant and began training with Madison. Since then Somerville, who became Executive Chef in 1985, has continued to work closely with local growers, cheesemakers, Purveyors and foragers to serve and celebrate the edible bounty of the San Francisco Bay Area.
San Francisco Zen Center’s Green Gulch Farm, a model of sregenerative organic farming and gardening, continues to provide the restaurant with its organic produce from its exquisite farm and garden.
