From a sea of cinematic talent, San Francisco’s International Ocean Film Festival has selected 11 films for special honors at this year’s 16th annual showcase to be held March 7 – 10. 2019 at the Cowell Theatre in Fort Mason, the Roxie Cinema in the Mission, and the Smith Rafael Film Center in Marin.
The first event of its kind in North America, the Ocean Film Festival was inspired by the well-established Festival International du Film Maritime in France. Award-winning works this year will highlight environmental awareness, wildlife and coastal conservation, and of course ocean stewardship.
“Every year brings a greater awareness of our ocean heritage, and every year brings fresh, new talent to our screens,” said Ana Blanco, the festival’s Executive Director.“
With films coming from the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US., this year’s line-up offers an international perspective on ocean issues. Since its launch in 2004, the Ocean Film Festival has presented an average of over 50 films per year, offering post-film Q&A sessions with visiting filmmakers, special panel discussions with content experts, and an annual free Student Education Program.
