Seafood Watch

In an update to its Seafood Watch standards, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has announced that farmed salmon certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), has advanced in their sustainable seafood ranking to a ‘Good Alternative’. The updated recommendation reflect the fact that ASC-certified farmed salmon now meet Seafood Watch’s own standards for sustainable seafood production.

At present, nearly a quarter of all farmed salmon produced globally is ASC certified, and members of the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) are the main sources of ASC-certified farmed salmon.

Seafood Watch measures impacts on marine and freshwater ecosystems of fisheries (wild-caught) and aquaculture (farming) operations. Their assessments and calculations result in a biannual Sustainable Seafood Guide. Check out their current recommendations on Salmon.
