At San Francisco’s 54 Mint Umbria-born Alberto Avalle and a convivial staff serve up some stellar pastas, often featuring their own house-cured meats. A delightful list of primi piatti here includes Sicilian rice cakes w/ black squid, and Parmesan shavings served w/ 20-year-old Balsamic vinegar. The wine list is exclusively Italian but, surprisingly, still offers a selection of good red and white choices under $35.
