Schug Carneros Estate Winery lies southwest of the town of Sonoma in the AVA’s Carneros Appellation. The old name of the region, Los Carneros recalls the days when it was home to sheepherders, dairy farms, fruit orchards, and hayfields.
Today vineyards here produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit that is celebrated around the world, in an area of low hills and flat lands vigorously enlivened by cool ocean breezes coming off the bay. During the summer morning hours here a ceiling of fog hovers over the vineyards. Later in the day, as it slowly begins to lift, it invites bracing sea breezes into the vineyards through a break in the nearby coastal hills known as “The Petaluma Gap”. 
Founding winemaker Walter Schug began his career with Joseph Phelps in the 1970’s, creating California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend, as well as several now legendary vineyard designated Cabernets.
